Ingredients

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon instant espresso powder or coffee crystals
  • 1 tablespoon light rum or milk
  • 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/8 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • Orange peel curls (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a heavy saucepan, combine egg yolk, milk, 1 tablespoon sugar, and espresso powder. Cook over medium heat until the mixture coats a spoon.
  2. Remove from heat, cool quickly in an ice bath, then stir in rum (or milk) and vanilla.
  3. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours.
  4. In a chilled mixing bowl, beat heavy cream and 1/2 teaspoon sugar until soft peaks form.
  5. Transfer chilled egg mixture to a punch bowl and fold in the whipped cream.
  6. Garnish with orange peel curls if desired and serve immediately.
