Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup full-fat coconut milk
  • 2 tbsp sweetened condensed coconut milk
  • Pinch of ground cinnamon
  • 5 whole cloves
  • Dash of freshly ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp fresh orange zest
  • 2-3 oz spiced or aged dark rum
  • Freshly ground nutmeg, cinnamon sticks, and orange slices for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the full-fat coconut milk, sweetened condensed coconut milk, ground cinnamon, whole cloves, freshly ground nutmeg, and fresh orange zest.
  2. Gently simmer the mixture for 20 minutes, stirring often to prevent burning. Do not let it boil.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the mixture cool for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to incorporate the coconut fat.
  4. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer and chill it in the refrigerator for at least an hour.
  5. When ready to serve, add the desired amount of rum to a glass with ice and top with the chilled coquito mix. Alternatively, add the rum to the whole batch of coquito mix and keep refrigerated for up to 10 days.
  6. Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg, cinnamon sticks, and orange slices, if desired. Enjoy!
