Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 10-12 cloves
  • 1 orange
  • 4 cups unsweetened cloudy apple juice
  • 2 cups white rum
  • 1 cup apricot brandy or Cointreau
  • 1 whole nutmeg for grating (optional)

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a saucepan over low heat and add the cloves.
  2. Use a speed-peeler to strip the peel of the orange into the saucepan.
  3. Once the butter begins to foam, pour in the apple juice and squeeze in the juice from the orange.
  4. Add the rum and apricot brandy (or Cointreau), then bring the mixture to a simmer.
  5. Turn off the heat and decant the cocktail into mugs or toddy glasses, removing the orange peel if desired.
  6. Finish by grating nutmeg over each serving, if using.
